What is the best time to visit Ahangama, Sri Lanka?+
The best time to visit Ahangama is from November to April during the dry season on the south coast. December to March offers the calmest seas and best beach weather. For surfing, the swell is best from April to October when the south-west monsoon brings consistent waves.
How do I get from Colombo to Ahangama?+
Ahangama is approximately 140km south of Colombo. You can take the scenic coastal train from Colombo Fort to Ahangama (approx 3.5 hours), hire a private taxi (approx 2.5 hours), or take a bus from Colombo to Galle and then a tuk-tuk to Ahangama. We can arrange airport transfers for all our packages.
Are surf lessons in Ahangama suitable for complete beginners?+
Absolutely! Ahangama has both gentle beach breaks perfect for beginners and more powerful reef breaks for experienced surfers. Our certified instructors teach surfers of all levels. No experience is needed — most beginners are standing on a board within their first lesson.
Can I see blue whales from Ahangama?+
Yes! The nearby town of Mirissa, just 30 minutes from Ahangama, is one of the world's best locations for blue whale watching. Tours depart from Mirissa harbour typically from November to April. We organise whale watching tours with pickup from Ahangama.
Do I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?+
Most nationalities require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka. You can apply online before travel at eta.gov.lk. The ETA costs USD 35 and is typically approved within 24 hours. We recommend applying at least a week before your trip.
What currency is used in Sri Lanka and can I pay in USD?+
Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). USD, EUR, and GBP are widely accepted at hotels and tour operators in tourist areas. ATMs are available in Galle (20 minutes from Ahangama). Our packages are priced in USD for your convenience and can be paid online via card.
